30th August 2018: The UK’s largest independent energy supplier, OVO Energy, will bring the I Dig Trees campaign to this year’s OVO Energy Tour of Britain by awarding a tree to the wearer of the OVO Energy Green Jersey each stage and planting it in their name.
OVO Energy is helping grow a greener Britain for future generations and have already planted over half a million trees in the UK’s cities, towns and countryside. A single tree can produce enough oxygen for a family of four for an entire year while removing one tonne of CO2 from the atmosphere over its average lifetime.
The trees planted in honor of the OVO Energy Green Jersey wearer will be heritage trees with varieties paired to the regions that they will be planted in. These will be a Bardsey Apple in Newport, an Avalon Plum in Bristol, a Blue Violet Plum in both Cockermouth and Barrow, a Bramley Apple in Nottingham and a Core Blimey Apple in London.
This year, 160,000 trees have been planted by 397 different community groups, enlisting the help of 7,259 volunteers. At this year’s OVO Energy Tour of Britain, some of these local volunteers will be invited to the race and present the OVO Energy Green Jersey to the overall leader in the Tour.
Chris Houghton, CEO of OVO Energy Retail, said: “We’re proud to be working with I Dig Trees, a sustainable charity who’ll be awarding a tree to the wearer of the OVO Energy Green Jersey each stage and planting it in their name. We’ve been planting trees across the UK since 2015, with thousands of volunteers getting their hands dirty and breathing fresh new life in their local communities. So it’s amazing that the race leader’s efforts in the saddle will make a lasting difference in reducing CO2 emissions and improving green spaces.”
OVO Energy created I Dig Trees in partnership with The Conservation Volunteers (TCV) in 2015. Since its launch, it’s encouraged schools, community groups, charities, stakeholders – and even OVO staff and customers – to volunteer 160,000 hours of their time and energy to plant 568,000 trees in 1,600 spaces right across the UK.
The race, Britain’s most prestigious international men’s stage race on the UCI calendar, is sponsored by OVO Energy, the UK’s largest independent energy company for the second successive year.
As well as the challenging eight day route, British fans can also look forward to once again welcoming a star-studded line-up of teams to race on home roads this September, including the likes of UCI World Tour squads BMC Racing, Team Katusha Alpecin and Team Sky.
