  • Kaluza, OVO Group’s intelligent energy platform, is joining forces with sonnen, one of the global leaders in smart residential energy storage.
  • The partnership involves integrating Kaluza with sonnen’s home energy storage system and virtual power plant, to provide flexibility services and help balance the grid.

London, UK – Thursday, 27th June 2019 –  Kaluza, OVO Group’s intelligent energy platform, today announces its partnership with sonnen, one of the leading smart energy storage systems companies, introducing new flexibility onto the grid.

The partnership, which is one in a series of upcoming collaborations between Kaluza and leading hardware manufacturers and service providers, signals a significant step forward for the energy industry as it transitions to a distributed, zero-carbon grid. By integrating with Kaluza, sonnen’s virtual power plant (VPP), based on its home energy storage systems, will be able to import energy when costs are low and export it when prices are high, or when called upon by grid operators.

sonnen has been actively developing its VPP solutions in the UK over the last two years, including the Cornwall Local Energy Market project where 100 sonnenBatterie systems have been digitally networked in homes throughout Cornwall.

Kaluza is one of the world’s first intelligent energy platforms that responds in real time to the grid’s energy supply and demand balance, wholesale prices and weather data, optimising the energy use of single devices, including home heating systems and electric cars. Aggregating these devices at scale, the technology creates flexibility to help push demand away from peak times, whilst meeting device-level consumer needs and reducing carbon emissions.

Stephen Fitzpatrick, CEO and Founder, Kaluza and OVO Group said:

“We will only achieve the shift to electricity through collaboration. The aim is to give customers the greatest possible choice, and the control to adopt an electric system.

Batteries such as sonnen’s are critical to our energy security as they support a resilient, independent energy system as well as providing back up supply. sonnen has created a world-class energy storage technology and we look forward to working together to deliver an intelligent, zero carbon grid.”

Christoph Ostermann, CEO, sonnen said:

“We’re very excited to integrate our unique, home storage based virtual power plant into Kaluza’s energy platform. The integration provides a large volume of flexibility to our customers and the grid, and automatically reduces energy costs and carbon emissions. It is a win-win situation for everybody.”
